WELCOME TO THE THIRD INSTALLMENT OF THE SIMRACINGONLINE 2025 YEAR-LONG CHAMPIONSHIP: F1 1984
This is the third series of a fourth series year-long 2025 championship.
Simracing Online tries to mix it up with modern, semi-modern and historic racing over a year-long championship. The chosen sim for this third series is F1 1984 by Chiefwiggum.
    - All cars in this mod are BOP'd.
    - You have to clutch the car manually, or the engine will blow eventually if you shift up without clutching.

We will race this fantastic mod over 6 events, all on actual historic tracks from the 1984 season.

    EVENT INFO:
    - All cars qualified together in the real events, and so shall we.
    - The points system will be the same as the previous 2 series to ensure points consistency, because this is a 4 series championship.

    BROADCAST
In principle, all races will be broadcast by Rob Milliken with allowance for the fact that he also plays in a band as a drummer and now and again has to go on the road.
In that case, the race will go on, but the broadcast is cancelled, unless we find a broadcast back-up.
Edit: In principle, we have a back-up broadcaster. But since it's undetermined when we might need him, it's not 100% sure.

    RULES & REGULATIONS - link

    Weather
The weather will be variable from event to event.

    ****************************************************************
    How does each race start?

There will be no formation lap & standing start, but a regular standing start, right after you click "RACE". In other words ... It's racing at the green light.
The reason for this is that there are usually problems with one or two member not properly locking in their red square at the end of the formation lap. This holds up the start of the race for a very long time. So it's best to avoid that.

    ****************************************************************
No Esc. on track rule in Qualification

In qualification, you can not press Escape (Esc.) while on track (if you crash) and then go back out again.
If you want to do another run, you have to come into the pits first.

This is to protect the other drivers from someone taking abnormal risks to set a good lap time and crashing (other cars).

    ****************************************************************
    Event notes

    Fuel normal
    Tires normal
    Damage 100%
    Qual 15 minutes all together
Race: original number of laps from the real event
The maximum field for all 6 events = 30 drivers

    ****************************************************************
    Custom skins

You can use custom skins for all cars in this series.

    ****************************************************************

AWESOME! I would recommend using a better version of Dijon though. The layout hasn't really changed since 1982 and this mods is in an alpha state at best with low res textures and bumpy mesh.

The modern version from Digga allows for cutting the "S" corners in sector 1. With this 1982 version you can't do that and it looks kind of historic and raw even though the quality is not top notch :). The Dijon 1979 version crashes on the server.
If you have a better historic version where you can't cut the corners, please let me know.

I don't have a clutch pedal.. what can I do?
I have a clutch on the wheel, will try how it goes, but it's not ideal.. downshifts are ok without clutch?

If you don't have a clutch, you can also just lift your foot between upshifts.
Yes, downshifts without clutch is no problem in Factor 2, as long as you let the refs drop down enough, but I'm sure you know that.

I don't use a clutch for these cars (only for starts of course).

    Was the 1979 version 0.51?

Can't remember. I deleted it. It's not better imo and it crashed to desktop for me.

Just because I tested it and it ran for me. AI is a bit screwed in the first corner though :D

    I think I'm good with the 1982 version. :)

So all of the cars have comparable performance - do they all have different driving characteristics?

They are all BOP'd in overall lap time and fuel per lap, and do indeed have their own driving characteristics and engine sound.

Also be aware of the fact that you can use a "boost" setting. Depending on how much you use it, this changes the amount of fuel you need, oil temp ect.
You can go crazy with it in qualification and use it tactically in the race.

    Some facts:
    - most people will do a 1.30.xxx with medium tyres on Jacarepagua.
    - for all cars, fuel per lap will be ca. 2.79 litres per lap.
    - for all cars, maximum tank capacity is 221 litres.
    - fuel needed for 90 minutes racing is ca. 168 litres on boost 1.

So you see you have a lot of wiggle room with fuel and boosting. But ... !! you can not re-fuel. If you don't put enough fuel in the tank for the race and you run out of fuel ... your race is over.
I also found that you can destroy your tyres pretty quickly... if you want to. The mediums were dead after 10 laps when I went 110% through every corner. You have to take care of your tyres.
That is why in Jacarepagua, you see Alain Prost coming from the middle pack and moving to the front and taking the lead halfway through the race. Because he was waiting and preserving his tyres. I think he only did 1 stop. They don't call him the "professor" for nothing.

I've just realised the race distance is 90 minutes - that's long!
Does it have to be that length?
Isn't that actually longer than a real life F1 race??

Real life F1 can be a maximum of 120 mins.

A real F1 race typically lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.
