Wheel grip protection

I've had issues in the past with the rubberised wheel hand grips on a Fanatec GT3 RS wheel and I'm now seeing it develop on my TS300 with the Ferrari F1 addon-rim. Although I tend to wear gym gloves to keep my hands dry, I still find that the open fingers allow my index fingers to wear this rubber material and it has started to deteriorate and wear, although only a little at the moment.

Does anybody have a suggestion on a possible protective spray type treatment or something else i.e. a car care product that might help provide some additional protection to this material? I'd rather not experiment and make it worse, so I'm hoping somebody else may have found a solution for a similar problem.

I has a problem on my Thrustmaster T80 for the PS4 where after a race my hand was black from the material deteriorating. My MOMO never did that. I blamed the problem on the sun because my PS4 was next to the window. My MOMO for the PC was never in the sun and I come to the conclusion it must have been the sun causing the problem. Is your wheel in direct sunlight?

I'm seeing that black residue too Doug, it's almost as if the rubber is losing it's basic texture and drying out or being susceptible to the rubbing of my index finger. No it is not in sunlight, but thanks for your insight on the same problem.
