Poll - Replace round 6 Surfers Paradise with a Daytona RC 2.4 event

Close to 20 members have asked me to organize a Daytona RC 2.4 hour event. So I had this idea:
We can replace round 6 Surfers Paradise with a Daytona RC 2.4 Hours event.

We will use the v1.28 Daytona RC, if Daytona is voted for (unless Daytona 2022 is ready for use).
We would start in daylight and end in the night.
This event will also be broadcasted.

If 17 members or more vote "YES", than we will go for Daytona.

Just out of curiosity...any particular reason v1.28 Daytona would be used instead of the immensely better version that James Mabe dropped on workshop for free some days ago?

It's a much better rendition of the track and from what I'm hearing this morning, is damn near on par with the newly released S397 official Daytona.
We used it at my 'home league' a few weeks ago for a 2.4hr race and it really brought some increased immersion and the infield section, in particular is SOOO much better than v1.28.

...however, either way, my vote is Yes.

ETA to add link to the Daytona I'm talking about...

I would like to see that version of James too, but as you can see in the Steam discussion, there are still some issues to be fixed. One is problem with no cut-warings on the chicane and one had to do with the IAW. Until that is fixed, and I don't know when that will be, I have to go with v1.28.
But ... as soon as the track is patched, it's in!

Well, there are cut warnings in chicane, they are just very forgiving. We had this discussion in our league and we had 53 drivers show up....no issues with guys cutting (and if so, it's easily policed by drivers...just send note after race if some knothead decides to break the rules.?)

The IAW....that's got nothing to do with an online race, does it? Wasn't an issue for us (and we did x2 2.4hr races and a 1.2 hr race in a couple weeks)

....but, anyways, I doubt it's going to be patched. James is a bit upset about how things went down.
Some guys in our modding group have been trying to convince him to sort a 'historic version' (with bus stop chicane removed, as it was in the old days) so that the track gets some usage now that most will move over to the official one. But, idk right now. He doesn't seem too enthused (and who could blame him, really)

It's an excellent piece of work. Art!
But I'll leave you be. I've said my piece and there is my petition to get it used here. It'll either work or it won't. ....but I'd be MUCH more excited to race Daytona if it wasn't for that horribly flat and glass smooth infield in v1.28 version. It really kills the vibe for me...but I'll probably race anyways. lol

well, chicane cutting, it doesnt matter what version it is, people doit anyhow. cutting not bad here but point is, if another version is better in other parts of track, maybe should test it out.

John has requested this track change to all the admins & so far most of us have agreed that its ok to change but we must keep in mind all new tracks must be added to the sro database and duplicate entry's will cause issues like if 2 tracks have the same names in the game and track data in game like track lengths as an example it will affect all records past and future in the stats & lap records ect.. & this could cause possible crashes in the data base so we need to be careful. When we read on steam last night what the modder posted (post was only 5 hrs old) is what has caused us the think twice about replacing the 397 version at this time. He did say he was working on an update in last night's post so we are just pumping the breaks a little. We are exploring a way to have both tracks in the database at one time so stay tuned. SRO's back end is huge and very connected as well as automated so that everything you do as a driver here is tracked and applied to your overall career, to do that everything must flow with precision. So, we have to make sure to not have any duplicates, that means we use one or the other so we are just checking all our options before we remove a track already attached to so many other things.
That said your experience with the track is good evidence to get this moving so just stay tuned;)

Out of curiosity...how come it needs to be added to the database (since it's a workshop item and not a rfcmp that needs to be installed inside rF2)
    Just wondering, trying to understand.

Have a look at your driving here, you can find every lap of every race you have been in & see all the best lap times of any track, all this comes from the database;)

I would also much rather prefer Daytona 2022 of course, so that's not the problem. I'll do my best to get it in. I have tested it already on the server and online it's all okay.

Adding an paid track into an existing series is of course not an realistic option, but I would prefer the official rF2 version :)
So far the visual and performance level of the track is very well executed (maybe next time).

But there is no bigger problem installing another version if the track is exchanged for the final round.

You beat me to it! :) I’ve bought the official version earlier today. Superb work, absolutely love it. However I am aware that some are adverse to using paid content sometimes (this applies to racers as well as league organizers) but like you say maybe this one will be considered in the future.

I would like to use the official 397 version as well, but I can't introduce a DLC in the middle of the series.
But for a new series, I would definitely use it. The free one is a bit heavy on fps, as where the official 397 one is much better on fps (with more detail) and has the AI working much better. Also, I learned from Rob that the grip levels are not that great on the free version. He is much faster on the official 397 Daytona.

After I removed the no-shows we're down to 25 entries at this point. Half of that +1 is 13 members. We are at 16 votes on YES now, so we are changing Round 6 to Daytona 2.4 hours.

    Thank you all for voting.

Cool. I see we're going with James' version.

About the above quoted though (just out of curiosity, nothing more) you are saying grip levels seem low on James' version or the old 1.28 version?

On thing we do at my home league for practice server (because often times there aren't really that many on at once to build a nice rubber)...we accelerate the track conditions x5 so for every lap someone does it is laying rubber down like they did 5 laps and with 8-10 guys or so you can almost get about what you'd have come race day when everyone is on.
I don't know how viable that is here, but IIRC you guys also restart server for that final practice session on race day...so we usually move it back to x1 (normal) for that final practice session and beyond. If you don't typically do that then it's probably not worth the additional hassle, tbh.
And just to clarify, I'm not asking for that to be done here, I'm just saying we've found it works out nicely and makes the practice server more valuable and more like race conditions.

Anyways, looking forward to it and I'll be sinking some laps in before race day....but first, couple other races. ...I don't remember if I have raced Istanbul Park before o_O

    That is James version.

I don't accelerate rubber build, but am willing to try it.

    Now I'm confused. LOL.
James' version (the new one that I assume is the one we're switching to) is called "Daytona 2022" in workshop, IIRC.
1.28 is the old version with the silky smooth infield. Perhaps James made that one too, but I thought it was someone else. So this is where I'm confused. ha

I mean that the Daytona 2022 has less grip compared to the S397 version according to Rob Milliken who compared the 2 tracks. He is about 2 seconds faster on the S397 Daytona in similar conditions with the same car settings. But I think the 2022 is the better version over v1.28, And I'm still waiting to see if the absence of cut warnings is being addressed.

Are you sure this isn't down to some other things? (Like perhaps track conditions at the time and amount of rubber)
Because I've tested both and I do not get these discrepancies at all. On studio version (which we're not even using, so I don't guess that really even matters) on James' 2022 and on 1.28 I do darn near identical lap times. So something weird is going on there.

The absence of cut warnings at bus stop chicane? Well, they are there they are just really forgiving. But, tbh, 1.28 isn't much better. You can cut the hell out of the bus stop without concern (we actually had some issues with that in the past where guys were cutting, at the right hand side in particular, and not getting tagged for it.....we just self policed it and it was fine)

As you can see I'm a bit dead set on 2022 version being the one we run. Tbh, I don't ever want to set foot of the 1.28 version again. It was acceptable when that's all we had in rF2, but we have better now and it's not just a little better, it's a ton better. The glass like infield on 1.28 (it's just one smooth surface, there is no detail to it at all) is kind of deal breaker at this point for me. Really hurts the feel of the track overall.

Anyways, probably seems at this point like I'm being annoying about this. That's not my intention so I'll leave it be and let you guys decide and I'll make my decision about racing based on that. No worries either way.

    Hi,
Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I've just joined SRO this week and the whole racing online thing is new to me (though racing offline since King Crammond's GP!). I'm keen to take part in this race and have signed up to SRO and registered for the event (I think!).
I'd be grateful if you could answer a really dumb question for me. I believe there is a server that can be used for practice, but I've been unable to find it. Can you tell me how to get to the server?

(For what it's worth; James Mabe has done such a magnificent job with his DRC that I think I'll have to send him a couple of £$, but Daytona over Surfers! No way! My vote would always be for Surfers. :D)

    Gilles
