Which one is the "best"? Assetto Corsa or rFactor 2?

  1. Hello,
I was wondering about the cars physics. Kunos Simulazioni's office is near the Vallelunga circuit in Italy and I read once that they preciously take every detail from each tested car. The official tracks are laser-scanned. Assetto Corsa has already lots of contents even without mods. I can run very fast with it and with lots of cars, I am not afraid of pushing at maximum just like a real world Toyota Yaris I've driven several times.

What is astonishing to me is the difference of fear of speed between these two games. I play Assetto Corsa since two years ago and I'm not used to rFactor 2 but I'm still interested. Even with the default cars, like the Corvette and the Skip Barber, I really feel afraid of going fast because the handling of these is very delicate. Certainly, the various bindings for pitting, ignition, launch control, are an advantage respect to Assetto Corsa.

But there is still a question that I hope you'll be able to answer: Assetto Corsa contains a lot of car brands and, probably, their physics are just like the real life cars. What about rFactor 2 modded cars? Let's say I download a mod for rF2 from a good modding site. Can I be sure that the physics certainty is just like the real life cars instead of the official contents?

Assetto Corsa is more realistic I think but a bit harder to get to grips with than RF2

As of mods there are some rubbish mods about that we try to avoid, RF2 is not as realistic in my opinion as AC but I do like them both plus it all comes down to personal preference.

  3. Thanks Nigel, I prefer AC too.

You would expect "official" content/mods to be perfect wouldn't you, with the expectation that it is based on real-life data, but sadly thats not always the case as no doubt we have all discovered in our sim-racing lives. But then amongst sim racers, who has the engineering design credentials to say whether any mod is right/wrong in terms of its performance, grip, handling etc? Its all about perception!

AC looks better and is possibly more accurate with its tracks/cars modelling but rF2 has a much bigger range of content available for free, to satisfy all our desires for racing whatever we prefer. Both fill the need in my opinion and it doesn't need to be about "which is better".

  5. What you say is true. It didn't cross my mind yet that the mods from both Assetto Corsa and rFactor 2 come from your site and of course are quality tested. It's just a misunderstanding.

I like rFactor 2 especially with DX11 but I just have to dive in more for the latter that I don't know yet because I have used it for a short period.

This is a highly debated subject ! 1,000's of pages across the various sim sites .. Its a virtual war zone of "my sim's better than yours" out there so i will tread lightly ! lol ..

For me I feel that rf2 might have the edge on psyx and for sure has the edge on actual racing environment ..
AC is a fantastic sim however it falls a bit short in the actual racing with its lack of features ,some have been added along the way with apps but if you look at the ISI gMotor engine , It has the ability to create any kind of racing you want with safety cars , driver swaps, day/night/rain/ standing starts rolling starts ,pace car starts ,parc ferme live stewards to hand out the proper penalties , just to name a few of the hundreds of options you have with rf2 .. The psyx also models allot more than the AC sim .. one example would be break fade .. In AC your breaks will never ware ..nor will you ever over heat them or suffer from break fade ..this is a pretty big deal when it comes to trying to simulate real racing and more so in endurance racing (where AC falls short)..its just not modeled , then theirs the training wheels 'auto pit limiter' rely ? they don't trust us to drive threw the pits so they just auto limit you lol .. I'm glad they at least let you put the car in gear now before the start lights go out ,well 3 seconds before but you can do it now ! Put simple AC has alot of arcade like features and not enough actual racing features when compared to rf2 .. This is good for the console crowed as there used to forza ,NFS & so on and that cash flow completely eclipsed the PC cash flow that AC generated early on .. they are millionaires now ..lol

Ac owners out number rf2 owners by like 3 million !

AC might have the edge for now with gps ..
    Praga 4.jpg

However the new DX 11 stuff looks fantastic ! so its more down to personal opinion !
    rf3 1.jpg

As for the driving ,AC is a dream to drive and the gpx are superb ,although if you look deep into the sim as pointed out if you check AC forum you will find some short comings in the psyxs department that have been discovered by some of the more advanced modders ,as a result AC cars all suffer from that ever present under steer ,its something in the suspension geometry ..but unless your a rocket silentest you wont even know .I just try to adjust my sets to try & get it to turn lol ..

Now when it comes to being behind the wheel in battle do any of these things rely matter , mmmm probably not as both sims provide epic racing once your driving ..

I find that AC has a bigger open public lobby crowed ,when compared to rf2 ..but league wise rf2 has the edge .
If you fire up AC and go search the open servers you will always find servers with 10- 24 drivers most are track days at nords ! lol but if you look you can find some great racing servers like our SRO server that is open and has lots of traffic! It seems the public loves 15min Q with 5-7 lap races on a loop .. Its a great way for recruiting drivers for our championships !

In rf2 the public lobby's are all but dead ..but the league servers have plenty of action ..
So if you want to race in rf2 join a league , if you like casual pick up racing AC has the edge as far as numbers go but look for servers with MR ! the drivers seem to behave a little better there !

IMO, rf2 has the more hard core racing enthusiast as followers .. not that AC doesn't as well .. It just ISI spoiled some of us with its ability to recreate actual racing !

For me I'm 50/50 between the sims , I race them both and enjoy them in different ways ! Rf2's learning curve is a bit steeper than AC's where I feel AC is allot easier to drive (once you learn that they all under steer , like for me with every AC car i can use the same style , lift early to make it turn , this comes back to the suspension geometry ) this is just my opinion biased on what I have noticed from the beginning with AC , A few of us here were on the AC early access beta group where I for one from the beginning was pushing for more race features:p but it fell on def ears at the time ..

Im not a fan boy of either sim I just love racing & to me rf2 has a 'more complete' racing structure, It may fall short with some bad mods & tracks from the community but the basic core of the sim is more advanced than ANY of the newer sim's out there ..

Now lets see what happens when pCars2 comes out !!! I have herd from some beta testers (that i trust that race AC & rf2 also) that pCars2 has totally changed there car handling and they compare it to be more like rf2 as far as feel ! this is good news !

I'm just stating my opinion ! your mileage may vary :D!)

Many strong points here.. so i won't tell nothing new
Nonetheless, i would like to say a few words
For me it's all about combos.. game+mod+track

Take the ISI's clio in Estoril, for example... (rF2) - great stuff
Show me a better FWD car in AC better????
Take a lap in the Lotus EXOS mod (AC) at spa.. Great stuff (just beautiful)

There is no SIM KING.. there's only well done combos (track/car) for the software they will run with

    my 2c
    subjective opinion

In my view its the one that suits you best. For some it RF2, for some AC, others like Pcars. The only real sims are the ones F1 teams use. And even those can't mimic real racing. An F1 car does 5G in corners and while braking (LMP1 comes close to that to), but how do you simulate 5G? You can't.... Plus, race teams will never divulge all their data to "outsiders", so all mods are just guesswork.
I own an RS4 in RL and have the mod on all my sims. I use Spa as a guidline because I've driven it with my RS4. Not one mod even comes close to the way my car handles on that track. So in all honesty, all these programs that are being sold to us as "sim" are just games. Good games, i''l give you that, but still games.

So at the end of the day, try them, if you like them, use them. And above all, ENJOY THEM!

  9. I'm sorry for having launched a debate on what is impossible to have one only truth.
I tried Automobilista to try participating at the current end of league, but it didn't work right. After calibrating the steering wheel in the settings menu, I tried the Chevrolet stock car but the steering wheel's behavior was awful. During a practice session, if I didn't hold it, it went left and right on its own. When I was holding it, the steering wheel was willing to turn more than usual and it didn't want to stay at the center position. Plus, there was no force feedback even with settings by default.

Hence, I was refunded for Automobilista because yes, every simracing game has its good sides. I don't know for you but for me, it seems like not every simracing game works properly.

The last time I had rFactor 2, the handling was perfect, it's just the game which is more difficult for me than Assetto Corsa. I would like to retry Project Cars to see the handling if it works right.

I like very much Dirt Rally too but the issue is that my steering wheel's profile, a Thrustmaster T300RS, is well recognized in this game but, for example, with a Lancia Fulvia (70's category), my H-shifter doesn't work at all, so I can only drive the Fulvia with the steering wheel's paddles, sequentially. It's also a shame like Automobilista. Too bad...

I use a T300RS with AMS without any problems Federico. You should have asked for assistance here before getting a refund.

  11. Hello Ken, yes please, can you tell me how you configured it? Or do you have a link somewhere where everything is explained for AMS?

"During a practice session, if I didn't hold it, it went left and right on its own. "
    i think it's the ffb
for th 300rs, in game, should be a positive value (i use 70%)
in RealFeelPlugin.ini... in ams main dir... for the stock car, the MaxForceAtSteeringRack value .. should be a negative value

    AMS uses realfeel
try and see the settings you have

  13. Thank you Ricardo for your tips.
Perfect, this time it worked just fine. Like you said, I've set the FF Strength at 70% and the steering wheel behavior was perfect.
There was no need to change the .ini file.
I will maybe have to know more about AMS commands later, like hud, replay functions, etc. I like AMS but maybe a graphics refresher could be useful because even with Anisotropic x16 and all display settings at max values, there is aliasing for the white lines when I am a bit far from them and when I approach from closer to the white lines, they are neater.
Apart from this, it feels pretty nice.

    Great!
I have almost zero experience in AMS
But i have some in rF1 and GSC, so I knew from what you said what was the problem
When you install a new mod ... and happens the same thing, go to the RealFeelPlugin.ini and change the MaxForceAtSteeringRack to positive

3rd party mods to look for:
    The URD corvette
    WTCC 2016
EEC Base mod + skin pack

These are the ones i have
    Tell me you need anything
    Cheers

Thats good info Ricardo and something I wasn't aware of, but I have fortunately not encountered any problems so far because of it. Must've just been lucky I guess :)

I've had similar gfx issues for a long time with rF, rF2, GSC & AMS where beyond about a third of the view ahead, it seems as if the AA/AF isn't working as it should be. I've never found a solution to it as yet. :(

  18. I haven't retried rF2 yet with DX11 but I must say it's gorgeous. I was driving a Skip Barber (which to me seems like a 2-stroke engine) during an AI race and it started to rain after a few laps. The awesome detail was like real life, that is, with the rain falling, the trajectory the opponents were following left this trajectory less wet. It was epic!

If you say so, maybe it's your PC performance, maybe I'm wrong. Try rF2 in DX11 version and see how it looks like. Of course, as always with strong AI, they all are 4 seconds quicker.
