Rolf go to your user cp panel top left of the page click there you can change all your account settings signature and upload avatar
Ok, It might be a plugin somewhere not installed on the site? I don't see the smiles either though sadly.
I am looking at that now might be the path will upload some later and try that but looking at the mybb forum a lot of people having same problem.
I have looked at everything it is all ok will try another path later and see if that works if not I am lost
Bigger so the image will be sharper if you have a good quality image Rolf will change mine just to see.
Changed the size you can upload so now you can upload a good quality avatar. Changed mine to check and it ok
