Alo all, it has been an absolute age since I did this. I'm hoping someone, anyone, has done this at some point lately. After a windows re-install, how on earth does one re-activate rFactor these days?. Can you still stick license somewhere?, if so, where?. In one of my searches, it said its all on Steam these days. I've never felt so old n thick, ok thats a lie.
AFAIK it's not possible to reactive an rFactor licence for software that was bought as a download originally. Was it from Trymedia? As an alternative you could install the official Demo version and then add whatever freeware tracks/car mods you want, it all works perfectly this way. Just search for it online and of course check it with a good AV before installing it.
If you have the license files (from a backup of your PC) than you can copy the files to this location C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Trymedia\licenses I did it once, on Win7 before to switch to steam rfactor. I don't know if it is working for Win10
I haven't got a clue, searched and although I did find stuff. I don't think I found the right stuff... lol. Unfortunately the file structure is different in Windows 10. Thank you for trying gents, even though I can't remember the last time I ran any of my 6 installs, I'm missing the chance... lol.
The free rFactor Demo is available on STEAM, so do as I suggested and install it, run it and exit. Then download and install manually the car/track mods you want to use. Easy Peasy and no licencing issues.
1. First of all install your original rFactor you once purchased (Full version). Don't start the game. Don't create a desktop shortcut just yet. (it's only meant to install the software on your computer) 2. Go to Program Files(x86) and replace the old Trymedia Factor.exe (2.10mb) with later updated this rFactor.exe (4.61mb) in your rFactor folder. (save a copy of rFactor.exe (4.61mb) on your computer for possible later use) 3. Now right click on rFactor.exe/properties/compatibility/compatibility mode (check the box and select Windows 7 in the bar below)/apply/OK. (this allows rFactor to be compatible with Windows 7 in Windows 10) 4. Double click on rFactor.exe and select a car and a track. Make your adjustments in the rF config.exe if necessary. (after in-game pressing 'race', press 'i' on your keyboard for AI control to check if the game works properly) If the game works well, go to Program files(x86) again and delete the rFactor folder. (the software remains on your computer) Now install this rFactor Lite and repeat the process from step 1 but use Lite instead of Full from now on. It creates a new rFactor folder. Rename that folder with the mod or championship you're running. (for example: rFactor xxx...) Note: It is important to install the Full version first. The Lite version doesn't install the software on your computer (as well as the Demo if I recall correctly), so you may end up with a Trial version. The same goes for not replacing the original Trymedia rFactor.exe in your rFactor folder with the updated 4.61 mb version. Remember to install Full only once, after that Lite will do fine for a new clean install. If you like to have multiple rFactor Lites on your computer, then repeat the process from step 1 using Lite every time and create as much as you want (don't forget to rename every rFactor folder in your Program Files(x86) with a different name; for example the name of the mod or championship as mentioned. In that case you avoid removing any already excisting rFactor folders and/or possible conflicts trying to install multiple cars/tracks in previous installations). Now install all cars/tracks you like manually. It is advisable to have multiple clean rFactors installed if you run more championships at the same time. Make sure to run every rFactor.exe compatible with Windows 7 in properties. Everything should work fine now without worrying about a licence. You probably want to create a desktop shortcut by right clicking on rFactor.exe (4.61mb only) and copy to desktop (do that for every installation you have and rename the shortcut exactly the same as your rFactor folder so you know which game you're running). You also may like to use the 4GB patch for every rFactor.exe you have installed to patch possible memory issues. I found some rFactor tools (XD and Carstat) for you to read some in-game car data. If you bump into issues, just let me know. Good luck. P.S. Be advised that this is the process in the old days to install rFactor. I'm not familiar with how it works in Steam.
Thank you Marc, I am rescued. Now of course, I'll never look near the beautifully working installs. I probably only wanted to because I couldn't. I now have all 6 of my old installs working again. Thank you again, you've made my day. I may never come down from this high, for a minute or three anyway.
