Hi, Thought I would post this here, might be of some interest to people, may even want to have a go themselves. I've been wanting to run the Spa circuit for some time, circuit wise I've managed to run Silverstone, Oulton Park, Goodwood, Thruxton, and Brands Hatch. The Spa event was celebrating it's 10th Anniversary this year and it sells out pretty quickly. I wasn't sure if I could afford the travel but when I did some research I realised I could do the trip reasonably cheaply on the Eurostar so that was what I decided upon. First flight of the day out of Guernsey to London City Airport, London underground to St. Pancras, Eurostar to Brussels-Midi, train to Verviers-Central and then bus to my hotel near the track. All went according to plan which I'm surprised about! Weather was ok but was due to change (will come to that in a moment...) Absolutely poured with rain the day before but sunshine in the afternoon. However it was quite cold. Then at about 7pm at night I got a notification on the phone "Stavelot - Heavy snow due this evening". Sure enough I looked out the window to find snow falling! This carried out throughout the night and when I woke in the morning I found lots of snow around, thankfully it was too wet for the snow to settle on the road and it wasn't cold enough for ice which at least was something. When entering the event you had the choice of 7km, 14km, 21km, or 42km. I went for the middle ground and did two laps at 14km. I walked to the track to collect my race bib and t-shirt, lockers were available for your belongings which was useful and the organisation was brilliant. The 14km group started at 12.00pm and after being brought through the F1 pits we walked down the pitlane onto the grid and away we went! I wonder if this was done deliberately to make sure we weren't standing in the cold too long. Good call if it was. It was very snowy! I just tried to take it as easy as possible, it wasn't windy just lots of snow falling. Obviously Eau Rouge & Raidillon were pretty testing but the Kemmel Straight just kept going. Thankfully it's the same angle all the way rather than getting steeper as you climb. Then once you reach the highest part of the track it descends back down, finally you climb back up to the Bus Stop and finish the lap. Run went even better than I thought, apart from a small walking break at the second lap of Raidillon I ran the whole 14km distance. It was an amazing experience to run such an iconic track, I will remember it forever. I may even try again another year and hope for sunshine! My only mistake was food supplies, I got by but of course at this time of year there is no racing or events. So all the restaurants and shops nearby were closed. Spa is about 50 minutes on a bus, but even there nothing really opened till late in the evening. I was staying in an apartment which was great but I'm so glad I stocked up on some M&S food to take with me on the Eurostar otherwise I would have been really stuck. Make sure I take a fold up bike next time, lol. A few photos below, I did take video (trying out an Osmo Nano) but need to edit it together.
